Rooted: Custodians of Our Land: Providing for The Community

The Gardener's House, Penzance, Cornwall

Exhibited 1st-30th May 2026

This body of work was commissioned by The Gardener’s House as part of Rooted: Custodians of Our Land: Providing for The Community. The series is part of a month long programme which explores fermentation, foraging and the field: three interwoven themes that ask how we grow, source and share our food. At a time when global food systems feel increasingly fragile, the project looks to West Cornwall's landscape and communities, and to the growers and producers of Penwith, from cattle farmers to lab grown seaweed. It celebrates a seasonal and local relationship with what we eat and the connection between our wellbeing and environment. The work was developed through time spent observing and understanding each person's day to day practice, and these conversations became as important as the images themselves. The images reflect the knowledge and care behind their practice, and the people behind the food. The portraits are shown alongside archival material inspired by Digging for Memories, about the Women's Land Army. This draws a thread between past and present custodians of the land.
